Two reasons. First, we built coinbooks.ai for one specific user — freelancers — so we don't carry the overhead of supporting payroll, inventory, multi-entity accounting, or any of the SMB features QuickBooks needs to maintain. Second, we use AI heavily to automate work QuickBooks mostly keeps for higher tiers or add-ons — categorization, deduction discovery, tax estimates — which cuts our costs and lets us pass the savings on. Versus Lite at the regular $20/mo rate, we're $5/month cheaper and we expect to stay that way.
Wave's free plan is genuinely good for light invoicing and basic books, and Pro adds receipt capture and more workflow — still a fair choice if your taxes are simple. The reason to pay for coinbooks.ai is the proactive work — we find deductions you'd miss, surface unused subscriptions, flag duplicate charges, and tell you exactly what to set aside for taxes in real time. Wave shows you what happened. We tell you what to do about it. If your annual deductions go up by even $200 because of insights we surface, the $180/year subscription pays for itself.
FreshBooks has a deeper invoicing feature set than we do — proposals, retainers, more invoice customization. If invoicing is the main thing you need, FreshBooks Plus is a strong option (list pricing is typically around $43/mo before FreshBooks runs a promo). Where we win is everything else around the invoice — AI categorization, real-time tax estimates, deduction discovery — in a flat $18/mo Solo plan.
